Sixty species swim the 51-metre viewing panel — sand tiger sharks, giant groupers, hundreds of pelagic rays — all visible to the 33,000 daily foot-traffic visitors who pass beneath the arch without paying. The paid dive program, launched three years after the mall opened, drops certified and first-time participants into the same water column, though separated by depth and supervision protocol.
Scuba diving Dubai Mall operates from a staging dock behind the main tank wall, accessible only through the rear aquarium entrance on Level 2. Participants descend in small groups — never more than four divers per instructor — wearing full wetsuits and standardized BCDs supplied by the facility. The water stays at 24°C year-round, clarity managed by a filtration system that cycles the entire volume every six hours. Sand tiger sharks, distinguished by their ragged teeth and passive temperament, dominate the upper water column, while the floor harbors stingrays and reef species imported from Oman and the Maldives. First-time divers complete a shallow-water briefing in a separate training pool before joining the main tank; certified divers with logged open-water hours skip orientation and descend directly to the 11-metre floor.
The program runs every hour between 11:00 and 19:00 daily, each session lasting 30 minutes underwater after a 20-minute equipment check and safety review. Weekday mornings see the lightest external foot traffic, meaning fewer silhouettes pressed against the acrylic during your dive. The aquarium prohibits flash photography inside the tank to avoid startling the livestock, but surface-level videography captures divers from the tunnel walkway below. Instructors carry underwater slates to communicate hand signals for buoyancy and ascent, and every descent includes a midwater pause at five metres to equalize and observe the feeding station where staff scatter mackerel twice daily at 14:00 and 18:00.
